Well, I just finished the second volume in the complete collection of Tintin’s adventures, which consisted of Tintin in America, Cigars of the Pharaoh, and The Blue Lotus. The first two were full of problematic stereotypes. The last one, however, not so much. The depiction of Japanese characters was gut-wrenching, yes, but the depiction of Chinese characters was surprisingly respectful. It was only afterwards that I learned that this was due to a Belgian Abbot requesting Hergé to be mindful, which led to his friendship with Zhang Chongren. While the plots made no sense across all three comic books, it was enjoyable to see characters start to make appearances across the books.
